Last Minute Canoeing and Hiking Tour in Southern Sweden
It is not easy to arrange anything in this day and age. First I wanted to go to Finland. Finland has been closed again since two weeks. Then Scotland. Scotland has been closed along with the rest of the UK since last week. And as of today, Iceland is also closed. Norway was also already closed.
By close, I mean you have to spend two weeks in quarantine upon arrival, or upon return. I’m not waiting for that….
So, what can be done? Sweden! Sweden is open to tourists. Indeed, Sweden has always been open to tourists and the corona situation there is now mild compared to some other European countries. You can and may also enter Sweden from the Netherlands.
I picked a trip in Sweden. In southern Sweden just under 10 hours’ drive from the Netherlands. This way you don’t have to fly if you don’t want to.
The trip I have in mind begins and ends in the town of Olofstöm.
Olofstöm is located on the southernmost wildlife area in Sweden and is surrounded by lakes and forests.
The plan is as follows.
We will spend a week wandering the Swedish countryside on foot and by canoe and while wild camping. Arctic Adventure Style. (Read: fully taken care of)
We moor the canoe at uninhabited islands. Make a campfire from scrap wood and take a dip in refreshing lakes. We might see a moose and preferably as few other people as possible.
After three days of canoeing, we pack the backpack (Rule me if you don’t have one) and walk back to our starting point. We spend the night in a real Swedish “Vindskydd.” An open wooden log cabin in the middle of nowhere.
At the end of the hike we are back at the starting point where a good meal awaits us and where we take a well-deserved sauna.
