What should we take with us to Greenland?
In this blog, I’ll give you an update on all the gear we need to bring to Greenland. We have already talked frequently about packing the bags and picking up the pallet. But what do we actually take with us all? I made an Excel list of everything we need, and I’ll tell you what’s on that list.
Clothing and equipment
Of course we bring clothes to stay warm, as well as other gear for the move. Consider a sled, tow harness, skis with ski skins, crampons and hiking poles. For safety, we have a climbing harness, leashes, carabiners, a glacier rope and a rad-line system to get someone out of a glacier crevasse. We also brought a flare and rifle in case we encountered a polar bear.
Navigation
A compass is essential for our navigation as we walk from east to west. We also have a GPS with us to make sure we are on the right course. To be safe, we brought a wind gauge with us so we can decide to stay in the tent an extra day if the wind is too strong.
Tent and cooking gear
Of course, we are taking a tent with us, the Hilleberg XROM 3 and the Hilleberg XROM 4 GT. We have snow pegs and bamboo pegs, a tent cloth to get rid of condensation and a snow shovel to dig ourselves out when we are snowed in. We also have brushes to clean our shoes before entering the tent, a thermo blanket for extra insulation and a thermometer to measure the temperature. For cooking, we use MSR brand gasoline burners, type XGK and Whisperlight. We have fuel bottles, a jerry can, an Arctic Pump, a fire blanket, pans, a ladle and a burner underground.
Eating and sleeping
We have thermos flasks, a thermo mug, a spoon, daily rations, a group corner and the Arctic Adventure Mug. For lunch we have a daily ration bottle of nuts. For sleeping, we take thick good sleeping bags, inner bags, inflatable and non-inflatable mats, a sleeping mask, earplugs, a headlamp, an inflatable pillow and a one-liter pitcher.
Communication and hygiene
For communications, we have a satellite phone, a VF radio, an inreach and POB bins. We also bring a camera, battery, memory stick, selfie stick, a panel to charge it, powerbanks and cables. For hygiene, we have personal medication, toilet paper, a garbage bag, sunscreen, a lip balm, toothpaste, a toothbrush and floss thread. We also carry a group first aid kit.
Repair equipment and transportation
We have repair tools such as spare ski goggles, spare ski pole, ski binding repair tools, a multi-tool, duct tape and tiewraps. For transportation, we have a ski pole for the plane. Furthermore, we take our passports, ATM cards and credit cards with us.
Conclusion
This was an overview of all the gear we are taking to Greenland. It is quite a list, but it is necessary to be well prepared for the expedition. Hopefully you have gained some inspiration for your own adventures. Thanks for reading and until the next update!
