On active winter vacation in Sweden

Are you still looking for a beautiful vacation destination where there is a lot to do in winter? Then consider going to Sweden! Its northern location makes it an ideal destination for winter sports, but there is so much more to explore and do! We tell you more about this unique destination and why you should definitely visit Sweden next winter.

Winter sports vacation

The most familiar form of winter vacation is, of course, by going on winter sports. This usually involves skiing or snowboarding, but other winter activities can also be done. Indeed, during winter sports Sweden there is much more to do! For true winter sports enthusiasts, the large ski area of Åre is especially interesting, which consists of three parts around Åreskutan Mountain. With more than 100 runs at various levels, there is something for everyone.

Other beautiful ski resorts in Sweden include the smaller Branäs and Sälen with over 80 kilometers of slopes. The downside here is that the slopes are not connected, but you can shuttle buses between areas. Branäs, in turn, is perfect for families thanks to its small size and maximum altitude of only 567 meters. The area is beautiful and there is a lot to do!

Dog sled rides through the snow

What could be better than traveling through the white landscape in a sled with a pair of beautiful huskies in front of the sled? You won’t soon forget this special experience! For example, search for the Northern Lights with huskies or travel from the airport to your accommodation near a ski slope by dog sled. Up to 2 people can travel per sled and it is often pulled by 4 strong Huskies. This requires no previous experience, making it accessible to all.

Hikes through the Swedish winter wonderland

Sweden’s varied and rugged landscape is perfect for long walks! Especially if you like a challenge, the vast forests and mountains on the border with Norway are a must. In winter you have special snow walks, often combined with cross-country skiing. In Sweden, there are several hiking trails, some as long as 400 kilometers, which you can hike in sections or just a particular route.

The Kungsleden, or King’s Trail in Dutch, is the most beautiful in all of Sweden and perhaps even the most beautiful in the entire world. The route has been around since the late 19th century and takes you through dark forests, along wild rivers and over the highest mountains. Another long route is that of Skåneleden totaling as much as 1,162 kilometers. The route is divided into 6 sub-routes with 100 separate sections, allowing you to choose what you want to walk. In this way, it is suitable for different levels. Along this route you will walk through deep forests with many coniferous and deciduous trees and deep gorges. Because the route runs along the coast, you will also encounter beaches and cozy fishing villages.

Wildlife in Sweden

During one of your hikes, you may encounter various wild animals. In fact, Sweden’s dense forests are the perfect habitat for many animals, especially when combined with the low population density. Animals such as the wolf, the lynx, as well as the brown bear can live here in peace. The wolverine, or wolverine in English, has also taken up residence in Sweden. This particular creature is mostly found in northern Europe, such as Scandinavia and Russia, but they also live in Canada. The northernmost part of Sweden, also called Lapland, is also home to large herds of reindeer.
