Arctic Happenings – Get the Arctic to you!
Newsletter from Arctic Adventure dated Feb. 7, 2021
It’s no different… We have to wait a while until we can go abroad again. Therefore, let’s bring the Arctic here. At least the freshly fallen snow and sustained frost over the next week are already helping. Wow how happy I was when I looked outside this morning and saw a white world! You too?
But … there are more ways to experience the Northern feeling. In this Newsletter, I tell you how to do that. In addition, you will read about two new expeditions in the Summer and Fall. So you don’t have to wait another year to join us in the Arctic! I hope you enjoy reading it.
Online Cooking Workshop – Swedish Cuisine
Swedish cuisine consists of more than the meatballs you know from the Ikea. How about Kroppkakor and Ostkaka, for example? During the online cooking workshop on Sunday, Feb. 21, between 3 and 5, you will learn to make two dishes from the Swedish province of Småland.
Kroppkakor are a type of potato dumplings traditionally stuffed with a bacon/onion/piment filling. If you like, you can also make a vegetarian version. Ostkaka means cheesecake. During the workshop, you will make the “quick” version with cottage cheese. To go with it, we make drottningsylt, which is a jam made from raspberries and blueberries. Feast!
The workshop will be conducted through Zoom. You will cook together with a professional Swedish cook. In advance you will be given a shopping list so you can get all the products you need. Furthermore, you also get a list of the necessary tools.

Exciting Scandinavian Series
After you eat these delicious dishes, how fun is it to give the evening an exciting and appropriate continuation. Currently, there are many good series and movies on Netflix set in Norway, Sweden or Iceland. I’ll go over some of them with you.
Go directly to Netflix by clicking on the title or watch the trailer first by clicking on the picture.
Trapped is set in Iceland. Shortly after a ferry enters the harbor of the Icelandic village of Seydisfjördur, a mutilated corpse washes ashore. Police Inspector Andri suspects the culprit is on board and tries to keep all passengers on board. When a severe snowstorm comes ashore that same day, the situation is no longer sustainable. No one can enter or leave the village anymore – including the killer. All residents suddenly become suspects, but they are also all in danger.
At Spring Flood police recruit Olivia Rönning delves back into a cold case of a sadistic murder of a pregnant woman after 25 years. To solve the case, she goes to see Police Chief Tom Stilton, who was involved in the investigation at the time. He is now a drifter and does not like to think back to his former life. Yet Oliva, with Tom’s help, slowly manages to get closer and closer to the solution.
Finally, another series set in northern Sweden. Exactly the area where many of our expeditions are: Midnight Sun. French policewoman Kahina Zadi travels to northern Sweden to investigate a brutal murder of a French citizen. Multiple casualties occur during the investigation, and a decade-old secret between townspeople is at the center of the various murders. Kahina tracks down a ruthless serial killer with a special plan.
New expeditions in the summer
We also experience the same long midsummer nights during two new expeditions in the summer. Like the Forces of Nature Trekking in Iceland. For a week, we imagine ourselves in a mysterious world. The world of lava, hot springs, fault lines and volcanoes. But also the world of whales, birds and waterfalls.
It starts the first day off right. We will go whale watching on a sailboat. With a small group accompanied by the skipper. Then we move inland, toward the Asbyrgi: The “Castle of the Gods. A beautiful valley in the shape of a horse’s hoof. Every day we cover 15 km on trails and across nature. The route passes the Dettifoss waterfall. The largest waterfall in Europe. We also walk over lava, over “new land.
Our route is right on the fault line. With the highlight being the Krafla volcano. At the end of the trip, hot water baths await for relaxation and afterglow.
Join us! A journey of discovery through the natural forces of Iceland.
There is also another cool new trip: the Canoe & Hiking Trekking in Southern Sweden. We do this expedition in midsummer and in the fall. A week of hiking through Swedish nature. First, we will explore the area by canoe. We moor wherever we want and spend the night on uninhabited islands. That is the freedom they call Allemansrätt in Sweden. The right of everyone to enjoy nature.
After three days of canoeing, we pack our backpacks and walk back to our starting point. With map and compass, we find our way. We walk part of the Skåneleden and Blekingeleden. Beautiful deciduous forest surrounds us on all sides. Along the way, we take a dip in refreshing lakes. We will spend the night in a real Swedish “Vindskydd” with the opportunity to build a campfire and enjoy the Midsummer Night.
Wander over Swedish lakes and through open countryside.
Whatever you do stay healthy!
