Epic trekking with Packrafts through the Scottish Highlands

Ingredients:
Packrafting, trekking, historic castles, Scottish Highlands, wild lochs, iconic Munros, Commando Memorial

Discover the Wild Heart of Scotland on Foot and by Packraft

Picture this: an 11-day journey of 130 kilometers and 4,200 meters of elevation gain through one of Scotland’s most rugged and beautiful landscapes.
A unique combination of hiking and packrafting takes you over mountains, along quiet valleys and across wild lochs, deep into the heart of the Highlands.
You’ll take on this adventure under the guidance of two experienced guides.
We packraft in two-person packrafts.

The adventure starts at the village of Acharacle, where your first packraft journey is unforgettable: past the mysterious ruins of Castle Tioram, a medieval fortress rising from the water.
Then you alternate between hiking and packrafting: over mountain passes, through valleys, and along quiet waterways.
You camp in tents, on deserted beaches, small islands, and in mountain valleys, always surrounded by nature.

This is no ordinary journey, but a full immersion into the Scottish Highlands, where nature, history, and adventure come together.

The History and Spirit of the Highlands

While packrafting may be modern, the paths and lochs you follow are centuries old.
Generations of Highlanders have driven their cattle here, traded goods, and conducted raids.
Castles and clan stories bring this route to life.

Along the way, you also step into more recent history:

  • Visit to the Clan Cameron Museum near Castle Achnacarry, the former Commando Training Centre from World War II.

  • Pass the impressive Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge, with views of Ben Nevis and the Great Glen.

Additionally, the route overlaps parts of the legendary Cape Wrath Trail, known as Britain’s toughest trek.
You also climb iconic Munros (peaks over 900 meters) that reward you with panoramic views of mountains, lochs, and islands stretching to the horizon.

What Makes this Expedition Unique?

Unlike a regular trek, the Highlands Packraft Traverse combines hiking with packrafting.
This way you reach places that remain inaccessible to others.
You carry everything yourself and are completely self-sufficient.
We packraft in 2-person packrafts.
An expedition in the purest sense.

The journey demands physical effort and perseverance, but the reward is great: silence, adventure, camaraderie, and a deep connection with nature.
Whether you’re gliding quietly across a loch, climbing a windy peak, or cooking together on a remote beach.
This is Scotland in its purest form.

Preparation for the Highlands Packraft Traverse

Introduction and Route Discussion

Before departure, we meet once, live or digitally. The date is planned in consultation. During this meeting:

  • we get to know each other

  • we discuss the use of materials

  • we review the map and the route together

This way, you set off well-prepared.

Renting Equipment

Don’t have everything yourself? When you register, you can indicate which equipment you want to rent:

  • Tent (1- or 2-person)

  • Sleeping bag (RAB)

  • Sleeping mat (Therm-a-Rest)

  • Backpack (Lowe Alpine)

  • Walking sticks

You pick up the equipment a week before the journey, so you can pack and test your backpack well in advance.

Renting a complete gear package?
For just €149,- you rent the complete package for the entire expedition.

During the Expedition

Expedition Experience

Every journey with Arctic Adventure is an Expedition Experience. This means: adventure just like on a real expedition. Sometimes challenging, sometimes relaxed, but always together.

  • Overnight stays in tents (in winter always at least 2 per tent, safety first)

  • Cooking, navigating, and moving together

  • Small team, maximum 8 participants → lots of personal attention

  • Often lasting friendships and reunions afterward

Contact via WhatsApp

Before departure, we create a WhatsApp group for questions and practical information. This group often continues to exist after the expedition to share photos and memories.

Condition and Preparation

For the Highlands Packraft Traverse, you need to be in good physical condition. We hike an average of 15 kilometers per day with a backpack weighing about 20 kilos.

Sports medical examination
Are you over 60 and want to participate in this journey? If so, we highly recommend you get a sports medical examination. Read more about the possibilities here.

Safety First

Our journeys go through remote areas. In emergencies, we are reachable, but rescue services may take time. Therefore, our guides always carry the following:

  • Satellite communication (satphone and inReach)

  • Digital navigation (GPS) and analog navigation (compass and map)

  • First aid and Wilderness Advanced First Aid knowledge

  • Training via the Wilderness Guide Association (WGA)

Additionally, there is always a Basecamp in the Netherlands available as an emergency contact for those at home.

Packing List

After registration, you’ll receive a detailed packing list. This way, you’ll know exactly which clothing, equipment, and personal items you need to be well-prepared for your journey.
