Press Release:

First Dutch travel company affiliated with 1% for the Planet.

Utrecht, Aug. 2, 2022

In its efforts to contribute to solutions for the climate problem, Utrecht-based travel agency Arctic Adventure has joined 1% for the Planet. From now on, at least 1% of sales will be donated annually to nature and environmental charities. This makes Arctic Adventure the first travel agency in the Netherlands to take this step.

Arctic Adventure undertakes trips to Arctic territory. The Arctic is one of the most vulnerable areas in the world. Nowhere else is climate change coming as hard and as visible as there. Travel agency founder Henk-Jan Geel wants to contribute to solutions by joining 1% for the Planet.

Geel, who is the only Dutchman accredited International Polar Guide, has been visiting the area for years and sees the consequences. The weather is more erratic and the reindeer struggle to find food.
“I realize that with our travels we are contributing to the problem of climate change. said Geel. ‘But we can also contribute to the solution. Perhaps precisely because we organize trips. This also allows others to see how beautiful, overwhelming and vulnerable nature is in the polar regions.’

Next Generation Officer

It is important that future generations can continue to enjoy nature. Precisely for these future generations, Arctic Adventure is working with an NGO, a Next Generation Officer. ‘What we do now has implications for the future and the next generation’ says Geel. ‘Many decisions in our company I consult with the Next Generation Officer. In this case my son of 14. It is important to engage in conversation and listen to him because my decisions affect his future.’ Joining 1% for the Planet is one of the initiatives that came about thanks to these conversations.

Spending donations

By contributing 1% of their annual sales, thousands of 1% for the Planet members have raised more than €300 million. This supports approved environmental nonprofits around the world.

Donations from Arctic Adventure’s annual sales go to Trees for All and Rewilding Europe. Through Trees for All, all CO2 emissions from each trip are doubly offset. Rewilding Europe focuses on bringing wilderness back to Europe. Together with the NGO, we are looking at more good initiatives.

About Arctic Adventure

Arctic Adventure was founded by IPGA guide Henk-Jan Geel. Together with a dedicated team of guides, they take participants to Arctic destinations. In small groups of up to 7 participants, tours include Swedish Lapland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Antarctica. The tours are divided into various levels making them accessible to a wide audience.
Arctic Adventure arranges most of the materials. As a result, participants do not need to purchase this. The materials are used frequently and intensively in this way. This saves money besides raw material.

Beyond its commitment to 1% for the Planet, Arctic Adventure has also signed the International Tourism Plastic Pledge. An initiative to reduce plastic use in the tourism industry.
