With this short break, you won’t have time to think about what you started. You start enjoying right away!
After arriving in Kiruna, we will transfer to Aurora Camp. A cabin complex located just north of Kiruna. In the middle of nature on the edge of the Torne River.
A beautiful place to unwind and see the first glimpses of the Northern Lights.
The next morning we set out after breakfast. We will wander the eternal forests and plains on skis. Everything we need is in the sled behind us. In the evening, things get exciting. We sleep in expedition tents, prepare our own food and sleep in a sleeping bag at -20 degrees. But the most exciting thing is; will we see the Northern Lights? There is plenty of time to hunt for this.
At the end of our back country ski trip, we arrive at the Ice Hotel. World famous for its artistically designed room. Every year different, every year an immensely wonderful world.
When we have finished looking, the husky guide is already waiting for us. Together with him we will spend two days exploring the wilderness of Swedish Lapland. We sleep in a wilderness cabin and enjoy the sauna.
As our last stop, we do Camp Ripan. Here a well-deserved shower and dinner at Lapland’s best restaurant awaits. When you get back on the plane the day after, you think to yourself, “How many weeks have I been away…”
Cross the following off your bucket list:
We spent over a week in the winter nature of northern Sweden. Here you will be introduced to winter expeditions. We are going to the municipality of Kiruna in Sweden. In the middle of Swedish Lapland. Far above the Arctic Circle and ravaged by the midwinter night and blessed by the midsummer sun.
When we are there, the sun sets at four in the afternoon. And doesn’t get up again until eight in the morning. Time enough to hunt for the Northern Lights. There are no guarantees on seeing the Northern Lights. We are there in ideal conditions, though. Above the Arctic Circle and in winter after dark.
Under the guidance of a professional guide, we enter the winter landscape. Completely expedition style.
Daytime is all about moving. We do that with touring langlauf skis. Special cross-country skis for walking in the great outdoors.
You get to borrow the full winter expedition equipment. Skis, sleeping bags, tent. Together with the team we are going to enjoy and perhaps suffer for 6 days and 5 nights in the winter cold of Sweden. An experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Guaranteed.
We sleep in a hotel in Kiruna for the first and last night.
We sleep in an expedition tent for four nights. And one night at a kennel.
The trip will take place when a minimum of 5 people register.

You fly to Kiruna on your own or take part of the journey by train. You arrive in Kiruna in the early afternoon. We meet at the airport or in the city center.
There is still a possibility to buy something if you forgot it in the Netherlands. Then we are taken to Aurora Camp north of Kiruna. Here we take up residence in one of the huts on the river’s edge. A nice place to start and… if the Northern Lights are there, you can easily stand on the ice with a clear view upwards.
We eat traditional dinner and sleep in a lodge.
After breakfast, we pack up. We strap on the expedition cross-country skis and venture out on a wonderful adventure. We set off with a pulk behind us. Everything we need we take with us. Food, tents, sleeping bag. Less than you think. Slowly we glide through the landscape on our way to… well, we don’t have to do anything. Delicious. We will pitch the tent in the late afternoon, make food and perhaps a campfire. Before crawling into our sleeping bag, we look up for a moment. Maybe we will see the Northern Lights (again).
In the morning, we wake up early. That sleeping bag was warmer than expected after all. Slept fine. We eat breakfast and fill our thermoses for the day. Today we will continue. Across frozen lakes and rivers. Through forests and over hills. In expedition style. Moving alternates with short breaks. This way we cover about 15 kilometers. In the evening we pitched the tent. It can be done almost anywhere. Delightful in nature. Just where we are at the time.
The morning ritual of the previous day repeats itself. We ski a few more kilometers today and then arrive at the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi. Every year this hotel is rebuilt from ice. Ice from the nearby Torneälven River. We are amazed by the beautiful spaces.
When we come outside again, the husky guide is waiting for us. He takes us to the kennel located a few kilometers away. Here we get an explanation about the huskies and the pulk. Before you know it, you are gliding on your own pulk with your own husky team through the Swedish forests and over the lakes.
An amazing experience to be a part of. We sleep in a wilderness hut. And after we have fed the dogs, it is time for our own dinner.
A sauna is also on the menu. But first, chop wood to light the stove in the sauna. Nothing comes naturally. Getting back to nature and feeling alive.
Early on we leave with the huskies. We have our own pulk and harness our own dogs again. We’ll wander over lakes, through forests and maybe even see a moose. The kings of the forest are numerous here, but know how to hide well. This is their home.
After a few hours we arrive at the kennel and say goodbye to the faithful four-legged friends.
We are taken to Kiruna. Here we eat a traditional lunch at a local restaurant. Local workers and officials come here for their Dagens Rätt. Their everyday. It doesn’t get more Swedish than this.
After lunch we walk to the adjacent hotel complex Camp Ripan. Here we will stay the last night at Camp Ripan. We can also use the Spa here (additionally bookable) A star location with sublime restaurant. We slide into the restaurant at 7 p.m. for a meal of local delicacies over a good glass of wine. Late into the night we talk on about the past few days.
After breakfast it is time to go. Depending on the flight or train times, the cab will be waiting to take us to the airport or train station. With a stopover in Stockholm, you will step back on Dutch soil in the early evening. The end of a few unforgettable days. But the question that comes up now is inevitable: “How do I explain this to my Family and friends?” That is actually impossible to do.

We meet once before the trip. Live or digital. We pick the date by mutual agreement. Then we get to know each other. You’ll get an explanation of the materials and we’ll consider the map. With tea and coffee, we will discuss the trip and if possible set up the tent.
Tours with Arctic Adventure are Expedition Experiences. You experience what an expedition could be like. Sometimes spicy, sometimes easy. But always together.
We sleep in tents. You do this with someone else (or your partner) from the group. On summer trips, you can choose to bring your own tent. So then you can also sleep alone. On winter trips, at least two people always sleep in a tent for safety reasons.
Moving, cooking and navigating are done together. The beauty of small groups is that there is always a real and good group feeling. Sometimes there are friendships and reunions years later.
We keep in touch with each other before (and often after) in a WhatsApp group.
This “Expedition Challenge” is a Red Label expedition and is challenging in design. Good fitness is necessary. Depending on the weather, it could be a spirited ride.
You don’t have to run a marathon. But assume you should be able to run 15 kilometers with a 15-kilogram backpack at a normal pace, 15 days in a row.
15 kilometers of continuous running is also good. Do you have any questions about this? If so, please contact the guide.
During the trek, there is mainly physical stress on the knees and lower back.
Are you older than 55 and want to participate in this trip? Then we strongly advise you to have a sports medical examination performed. Read more about the possibilities here.
During the trip we are in uninhabited territory. In case of emergency, our position is always reachable by rescue services with a snowmobile.
The guide has communication devices and both digital (GPS) and analog (Compass) navigation.
The guide is trained in Wilderness Advanced First Aid and WGA I (Wilderness Guide Association)
After your registration (or upon request) you’ll receive a detailed packing list.
Do you want to read more (everything) about cross-country skiing? Because that’s what we’ll be doing during this expedition. Then read it on the site of toerlanglauftochten.nl.
